Europe’s energy ties to Russia for the long term.

EU has announced a plan to reduce Russian gas imports

During the Ukraine conflict, the European Commission disclosed plans to reduce European Union member states’ reliance on Russian energy sources, proposing to reduce Russian gas imports by two-thirds this year.

By tapping new gas supplies, ramping up reserves for next winter, and accelerating efforts to be more energy efficient, the EU’s executive arm said it could eliminate a large portion of its reliance on Russia.

“By the end of this year, we will be able to replace 100 billion cubic metres of Russian gas imports.” “That’s two-thirds of what we import from them,” EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans told reporters on Tuesday in Strasbourg, France.

The EU claims that by 2030, it will be completely independent of Russian gas, oil, and coal.

Timmermans, on the other hand, advised caution.

“The reality is that quite a few of our member states would be in serious problems if all of their energy came from Russia tomorrow,” Timmermans told members of the European Parliament earlier.

“As a result, we need to make certain… He went on to say, “We don’t do more harm to ourselves than we do to Putin.”

The declaration comes after the US announced a restriction on Russian oil and gas imports.

For the first time since the invasion, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak threatened to cut off gas supplies to Europe on state television on Monday.

The European Union relies significantly on Russian fossil fuels. According to the commission, 90 percent of the gas used in the EU is imported, with Russia contributing 45 percent of those imports at various levels to EU member states in 2021.

The EU Commission’s president stated in a news statement that the group must become “independent of Russian oil, coal, and gas.”

We can’t rely on a supplier that threatens us openly,” says the company. According to Ursula von der Leyen

The comments came only days before a gathering of EU leaders to consider how to reduce Europe’s long-term energy connections with Russia.

According to a draught of a proclamation planned to close the meeting published by AFP news agency, the 27 leaders will agree “to phase away our dependence on Russian gas, oil, and coal imports.”
